Gender and rural microfinance in Africa
Over the last decades, the governmental and non-governmental sector in Africa made important efforts to facilitate access of the rural poor to financial services, in particular through microfinance. Although the majority of microfinance organizations are also targeting women, in the current process of innovation and expansion of rural finance, gender dimension has not been always taken into account.
In the framework of the Regional Capacity-building and Knowledge Management for Gender Equality Programme, FAO-IFAD and PROCASUR launch the Learning Route: Gender and rural microfinance – New approaches, services and products in Africa, a practitioner-to-practitioner training in order to increase awareness about gender differences in services and products, as well as strengthen women’s access to micro financial services.

Género y microfinanzas en África
En las últimas décadas, el sector gubernamental y no gubernamental en África ha realizado importantes esfuerzos para facilitar el acceso de la población rural pobre a servicios financieros, en particular a través de las microfinanzas. Aunque la mayor parte de las organizaciones de microfinanzas están también dirigidas a las mujeres, en el actual proceso de innovación y expansión de las finanzas rurales, la dimensión de género no ha sido siempre tenida en cuenta.
En el marco del Programa para la Generación de Capacidades y la Gestión del Conocimiento para la Igualdad de Género a nivel Regional, la FAO-FIDA y PROCASUR lanzan la Ruta de Aprendizaje: Género y microfinanzas rurales - Nuevos enfoques, servicios y productos en África, una formación entre pares con el fin de incrementar la conciencia acerca de las diferencias de género en los servicios y productos, así como también fortalecer el acceso de las mujeres a servicios microfinancieros.
